TRASH MENAGERIE SEPTEMBER RECAP

This is what Trash Menagerie was throwing down during the month of September. Features, interviews, parties, and plenty’a mix and MP3 download. We’re snuggling in for the busy month of October. Have you started thinking about your Halloween costume yet? We’re looking for ideas, so please hit us up and let us know if you’ve got any. Last year we gave you a heads up on how to MAKE YOUR OWN DAFT PUNK COSTUME. Hipster Runoff offered up a bit of inspiration, “WTF SHOULD I B 4 ALL HALLOW’S EVE”, But is it “ok” to be a Justice this year, if you were a Daft last year?

A truly scary option, the United States Vice Presidential Republican
Candidate
and current Governor of Alaska - Sarah Palin.
Sarah Palin Halloween Viking
Hmm, I guess she didn’t get understand the memo regarding last year’s Halloween Party. It was a Nordic theme. Looks like she still won anyway, even though she didn’t really come close to qualifying.

Sarah Palin 7 Months Preggers “I can hide my belly in a sexy, yet sophisticated, little black business suit.”
Sarah Palin seven months pregnant
Goodness, her belly is HUGE, she looks like she’s going to pop any day now, right?

This is what Demi Moore looked like when she was seven months preggers . . .

Sarah Palin’s Witch Doctor . . .

Other potential options - “Sarah Palin Mayor of Meth”, “Sarah Palin Miss Alaska”, “Sarah Palin Soccer Mom”. Wow, and to think, the election isn’t even over yet, we’ve still got a few weeks to go . . . goodness, i’m sure we’ll have so many more choices to choose from. Maybe i’ll pull off one of those “couple costumes,” and we can go together as “Foreign Palin Policy“. One of us will be Russia, and the other Alaska, and we’ll stand on opposite sides of the room and say “I can see ya over there, behave yourself!”

Anyway, Sarah, this song is dedicated to you . . .

A Black Hole is Opening

With all this talk of the LHC creating a black hole that will envelop the earth I think it’s about time that I write about the latest of up’n'coming Chicago producers, Black Holes. They are rather new to the scene here but they show little sign of n00biness. They are clearly some of the best producers to arise from our fledgling electro scene and certainly a welcome change from the mash-up and b-more that dominates the city’s hipster nights.

I’m not trying to belittle their abilities here, but describing their sound is rather simple. They sound like Crookers. So here’s where you think to yourself, “Why would I listen to this if I can listen to Crookers?” Well, firstly, Crookers is good and these kids are almost just as good. Two Crookers is better than one, my grandfather always told me. Secondly, I’m not sure if you guys are old enough to remember but about a year and a half ago (feb 7, 2007; about 8 years ago in blog years) I remember the fluokids posting a little tune called “Massive” by a then unknown duo called Crookers (later released on Pottymouth Records) that was somewhat overlooked because the general consensus was, “Oh, no big deal, they are just trying to sound like Switch.” Well, look where that got them. And I feel like Black Holes are capable of the same thing in the near future if they keep plugging away and develop their own sound so, when you download and play these tunes out now, you will have future ammunition for when they get big and you want to assert your authenticity. Although, now that I’ve said that, does it negate ones ability to use this as snob-fodder?

Anyways, they have certainly caught folks ears here in Chi and elsewhere. They were tapped to open for MSTRKRFT on their upcoming Chicago tour date. They also happen to be the winners of the Trouble & Bass Little Jinder remix contest that recently took place. Here’s a couple of their tunes to whet your appetite and you can hear their winning remix on their myspace.

MSTRKRFT - Fist of (oh my) God Tour

This weekend kicked off MSTRKRFT’s North American Fist of God Tour starting with Friday night in boiling LA at the Henry Fonda theater and WHAT A SHOW!

It being an all ages event, the youngins were all afresh in their scandalous attire, nymph-like dance moves, and damn did they get there early. By 10pm the place was packed and it was a sold out show!

Italy’s Congorock kicked things off with fun groovey dance beats, followed by Felix Cartal throwing down teeth gritting hard tracks that had people jumping like a mosh pit, then LA Riots, A-Track, and finally the night capped off with MSTRKRFT. Different from a normal MSTRKRFT show? Yes. In their set they included a lot of tracks that are going to be on their upcoming album!

With that many dj’s playing, I thankfully only heard one very noticeable track twice: “Bounce Low feat. NORE”.

This tour is worth the money to go to, it’s quality and the lineup is almost festival like. They’re going all over the US, so check the myspace page of MSTRKRFT for tour dates, etc. in your city.

Oh- and the follow up show on Sunday night at the El Rey was also great, the visuals looked really fantastic so kudos to the tech guys on that. The after party at LAX was a continuation of fun times with MSTRKRFT hitting the decks alongside Steve Aoki at the Banana Spilt Sunday party. Highlight of the after party: people having a big enough sense of humor to play fantastically cheesey club hits from the early 2000s.

Check MSTRKRFT’s MySpace for Fist of God tour dates!

Chromeo ‘Fancy Footwork’ Competition - Win Tickets for their London show

chromeo - fancy footwork

If you’re skint like me, you like stuff that’s free right?

Well, for little more than the cost of denting you or your friend’s credibility, you can win a pair of tickets to see funk-tastic Chromeo LIVE at London’s The End/AKA on Thursday 21st August 2008.

We’ve got 2 pairs of tickets to give away.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO TO WIN A PAIR: email me with a video or link to a video of someone doing some ‘fancy footwork’ . It could be you or your mum or your second cousin’s second cousin - we don’t care, as long as it makes us laugh!

Hell, if you’re really hard up for an unsuspecting victim, you could even rip it off Youtube - but you’ve gotta be a bit clever.

Hang with me and the UK TM crew (plus the ubiquitous PR types) and check out other acts specially picked by the dapper dudes, plus drink free beer all night long, courtesy of San Miguel!! It’s part of their yearly summer music series, Hidden Depths. Dave 1 and P-Thugg return to London after a sold-out gig at Camden’s Koko and wowing music know-hows as support on Bloc Party’s British Tour.

Email your vid to: writers@trashmenagerie.com, with FANCY FOOTWORK in the subject.

DEADLINE: Sunday 17th August 2008, midnight GMT.

I will email the two winners directly on Monday 18th August. In the meantime, to get you in the mood, download and check out these two Chromeo remixes of “Needy Girl” and “Tenderoni” from Lifelike and MSTRKRFT.

Chromeo - Needy Girl - Lifelike Edit

Chromeo - Tenderoni - MSTRKRFT Remix

PS - Double your chances for tickets by going to the San Miguel site. And if you miss out this time, they’re playing around Europe for the rest of the summer at the following festivals.

22 Aug 2008 - LEEDS Festival - Leeds
24 Aug 2008 - READING Festival - Reading
29 Aug 2008 - SURFSTOCK Festival - Cornwall

FOOLS GOLD SUMMER

Record Label, Fools Gold is about to make this summer even hotter with a slew of new releases scheduled to come out in the next few months.

If you have been living in a cave or maybe some how stuck in time back in Soviet Russia, Fools Gold is the new indie record label started by Nick Catchdubs (who was just featured here on Trash) and A-trak. The label, so far is famous for bringing the world rapper Kid Sister and rapper Kid Cudi, who surprisingly are not related but both amazing. They have also introduced Canadian powerhouse producer/dj duo, Jokers of the Scene and Sammy Bananas a member of East Coast phenoms, Certified Bananas.

This is the kind of thing Fools Gold is about; introducing and breaking new talent to the scene and keeping things fresh. Not to mention the artwork is astounding because creating it is super designer, Dust La Rock.

They have recently released a Kid Sister remix ep with mixes by Simian Mobile Disco and JFK from MSTRKRFT. Head over to RCRDLBL to hear a preview.

Next up is the KAVINSKY picture disc vinyl “BLAZER”.

kavinsky

And it keeps getting better and better.

Atlanta’s Treasure Fingers is releasing his hit single “Cross the Dance Floor” with huge remixes by Laidback Luke, Curses! and lifelike.

Then Canada invades the scene with “Acid Bagg” ep by Jokers of the Scene. Almost everyone has been waiting to get there hands on a copy of “baggy bottom boys” and this will be the chance. Brodiniski and Destroy Disco will also be appearing on the ep remixing “acidrod”.

And speaking of Jokers of the Scene, they have just teamed up with NYC clothing company MISHKA for their new mix tape series “Keep Watch” – listen to the mix tape here – MISHKA explains, “Mix tapes have always been an integral part of NYC’s underground culture and burgeoning music scene, and as such, Mishka is proud to carry on the tradition with the launch of Keep Watch. Featuring top DJs hailing from every genre and geographic corner, Mishka’s Keep Watch party-mixes celebrates one of the most widely practiced American art forms. Released on a semi regular basis (usually to accompanying party), the mixes will be available for free download through our site, the Bloglin and very shortly podcast on Itunes.” The mix features a track from the “Acid Bagg” ep and one from labelmates, Nacho Lovers, ep.

other scheduled releases are:

FGR011 - Four Color Zack & Pretty Titty Sing Sing Breaks
FGR012 - Sammy Bananas Braids & Fades
FGR013 - Jokers Of The Scene Acid Bagg EP
FGR014 - Nacho Lovers Go On / Acid Life
FGR015 - Bag Raiders Big Fun EP
FGR016 - Trackademicks Enjoy What You Do
FGR017 - Crookers EP
FGR018 - Congorock EP
FGR019 - LA Riots EP
FGR020 - Malente I Like It

So keep a look out and be aware!

Also if you’re in the Chicago area on August 23, 2008, co-owner of Fools Gold, A-trak will be performing at Subterranean. It’s a 17+ show, so buy your tickets here. And grab those two tracks of his off his blog here.

Defeat!

ToxicAvengerMay

It has been a while since the last feature on The Toxic Avenger and the timing couldn’t be better as he has sent over his latest grinder of a track, “Defeat!“, as well as some exciting updates!! To say that the Toxic Avenger has been working, would be an understatement. He has been relentless at gigging in the U.S. and Europe and still finding time to create new music, remixes and prepare for his forthcoming EP and LP.

Having just finished off 2 new remixes, Ladytron’s “Ghost” and one for South African group Playdoe, (side project of Spoek of Sweat.X + Sibot), Toxic is set to release his EP, 26th of May on Boxon Records. The EP will contain 4 brand new songs. “Bad Girls Need Love Too“, with remixes of the track by Les petits pilous and Leonard de Leonard. The 4th song is titled ” __________”. (that is the name) For now, you can have a listen to all of them at Toxie’s Myspace.

With a cast of talent collaborating on the video for “Bad Girls Need Love Too”, it looks to be a visual masterpiece! Styled by esteemed Parisian fashion designer, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, (also known as JC/DC), who has dressed some of our favorites, including M.I.A. and Yelle, we can expect to see some colorful pop art inspired fashion!

Borntofilmclip

The above image is a video-clip of The Toxic Avenger – “Bad Girls Need Love Too”, created by Mathieu Danet of the talented Born To Film team. The video was shot in Paris on 7th of April, and is due out at the beginning of May. The EP photo cover was created by Hélène Giansily and the cover design by Anem. The model in the video is a young French girl named Solweig.

Toxic is also working on his LP, which he is hoping to have out sometime in late 08′ off iheartcomix. If you happen to find yourself hanging out in Aix, South of France, the 28th of June, festivities will ensue with the likes of: MSTRKRFT, The Bloody Beetroots, Vicarious Bliss, Les petits pilous (LIVE), Toxic Avenger, Strip Steve, Uffie (LIVE), Paraone (LIVE) and ER2 (LIVE). Looks to be a swell time!

Slave to Gossip

GOSSIP

One of our favorite trios, Beth, Brace and Hannah of GOSSIP, landed straight into our hearts with their elevating and energetic tune, “Standing In The Way Of Control”. We knew we wanted more and shortly after, they fulfilled our desires with “Jealous Girls” and “Listen Up”. We’ve been a slave to their rhythm ever since.

Gossip has been remixed by Arthur Baker, MSTRKRFT, Playgroup, Tiga, Tronik Youth, Headman, Punks Jump Up, Rory Phillips, Tommie Sunshine and Soulwax to name a few. They’ve toured with No Bra, Panther, Pre, Les Georges Leningrad, Chromatics, CSS, Le Tigre and Cyndi Lauper.

They’ve been working hard on their new LP and are set to release “Live In Liverpool“, their 2-disc CD/DVD, (off Columbia Records’ Music With A Twist imprint) on Tuesday, 15th of April!! Recorded live in concert on July 9, 2007, by documentary filmmaker and video director Lance Bangs, “Gossip - Live In Liverpool” brilliantly captures the intensity at the core of Gossip’s sound and you get to see Beth smashing it in shiny gold lamé!!

For the release, they will be celebrating with their fans at a one-off performance on 15th of April along with Shy Child at Webster Hall in New York City!! Not to be missed!!!!! Webster Hall ticket info

Stay updated on Gossip via their My Space and pick up “Live In Liverpool” with a quickness!! Here’s a sneak peek!

Trash March Recap!

MarchTrash

I feel it is of high importance to let you all know that it has taken a long fucking time to compile all 65 features that the entire TRASH clan has worked up during the month of MARCH. MARCH marks an entire year of madness for TRASH MENAGERIE and we haven’t stopped to breathe just yet. We’ve swooped into your lives to take over and give you something to do whilst passing the time. Beyond the amount of content that is growing, TRASH is now armed with a few more contributors. This just means more top-shelf features from a few more music lovers. We’ll strive to continue to bring you loads of MUSIC that we each love for whatever reasons and also find the time to pick the brains of the talent behind said MUSIC (time permitting). We’ve got 2 new sections to your right, MIXES and LISTINGS. Get to know each for all the right reasons. Lastly, the TRASH TALK FORUM has sprung a new life and will be back in FULL FORCE. We’ll also try our very best to not BOLD every word like I just did to emphasize what is important in life: TRASH and MUSIC (until it’s ingrained in your heads).

No Love Lost Records and Trash are developing quite a healthy relationship. Give us a proper mix and we’ll be more than pleased – I’d say elated if it ends up being as good as this one RAFFERTIE has created for The Mixtape Project and given to Trash to post as an exclusive.

I have to say that I absolutely luuuurrrvvve what the Brits are doing these days with their mixes. The last I listened to over and over was from ME ME MEMeMeMe is a Fine Piece of Ass. All this OLD JUMP UP BASSLINE is really causing quite a stir inside!!!! Kicking if off with a William Shatner intro right into an excellent mashup of “So Solid Crew vs. Hostage - 21 Seconds (Raffertie’s Mashup).” Within this superb mix lies “Solid Groove - This Is Sick (Yeah! Woho! Remix) (Raffertie’s Wideboy Edit)” which is just killing it every time – The Yeah! Woho! Remix and now Raffertie’s “Wideboy Edit” of it which is beyond perfect. Shit, listen to what happens with DJ V and Rolla - “Miracle”. I don’t recall hearing that track sound so good, IF EVER, until NOW. Toss in some garagey bassline and BOOM, MAGIC.

Another highlight is “OH SNAP!! - Bill Cosby Sweater (Hostage Remix)”, which I love, especially when blended right into “Chaka Kahn - Ain’t Nobody (Raffertie’s Remix)”!!!!! If this style can cross over to the states, IMMEDIATELY and infiltrate itself into the clubs, then we’re sure to have a right BANGIN party!!!! DJ’s of the planet are you listening?? This is the stuff that make panties moist, now please, without further ado, GET ON THIS MIX!!!!!!!!!!!! (and a few words from NLLR, cheers Lee!!)

“To help spread the RAFFERTIE gospel, The Mixtape Project has hooked-up with the ever sexy TRASH MENAGERIE. Be sure to stop by TRASH to say, what’s-up! Oh and as a bonus, you’ll find a link to the mix RAFFERTIE sent TRASH in January, the aptly titled “Baaaaaaaaassline!” mix – RAFFERTIE’s “Baaaaaaaaassline!” for TRASH MENAGERIE.

Do you like Bassline? Niche? Speed Garage? Old Skool Rave? We here at The Mixtape Project absolutely love them, so does DJ/producer RAFFERTIE, hence our inevitable request for the man to whip-up one of his brain liquefying, breakneck sets for us. Fidgeting, reversing, retrofitting and wonkifying (yes, I just made that last one up!) his way through twenty-seven tracks (appropriate since this is our twenty-seventh exclusive mix) RAFFERTIE once again proves himself to be one of the most innovative and hands down (more…)
